What Spelling?

OK, I think Finley will probably be the name. Not 100% but close. We have been looking at other names and we just cant find any we like as much as Finley. I was speaking with my mother in law- Mary- today and she said Finley sounds kind of Asian-- like Fin Ley. I had never thought about that before but it kind of does sound Asian which led our conversation down a spelling path. Mary suggested the spelling Finlee instead of Finley. I am not one for odd spellings because I think it makes it tough for kids with having to spell it and pronounce it -- BUT-- I don't think the spelling Finlee could be mispronounced. I also think it is kind of cute and defiantly a different spelling from the traditional spelling. So, give me some input-- Which do you like better-

Finley or Finlee

  1. LOVE the name!! I know what you mean about trying to make it easy for the child later. I'm afraid Wesleigh will have to spell her name forever! I hate that, but couldn't pass on the name. I like the original spelling "Finley". I always wished I had a "y" on the end of my name so I could make curly Q's with it :)

    So excited for you!!

  2. I can't express how excited I am about your adoption. Who is your social worker???? We had Maria and loved her!!!

If it were me, I would choose Finley. Personally because I love how it looks when you sign her name using this spelling but my only thought is I'm wondering if people would mispronounce the "ey" in Finley as "ay" like in "they" or "hey".

Hoping everything goes perfectly next week (I know it will). Take care!!!

  3. How exciting that you are closer to choosing a name! I love Finley and prefer it spelled "Finley." I like the way it looks and to me it looks exactly as you would pronounce it. Of course I also thought "Mia" would be pronounced correctly but the majority of the time people prounounce it "Mya."

  4. Love the name too and I think I'm leaning towards liking Finlee more than Finley, not sure why. Maybe it seems a little more feminine to me and it's a little different without being too different in spelling, and in reality she might have to spell it out anyway the rest of her life. I've had to spell Christine out since I could spell.. lol and people still want to either spell it with a K, no H or call me Christina, go figure.

  5. Hay Linda,

Our social worker is Anita and she is so awesome. I am soooo pleased with her and I am going to see if we can get all of our visits in before we leave for Haiti on June 21. I would be soooo excited if we could get our HS done within a month or so-- how awesome!! That would speed things along really well!

  8. Congratulations Christy!! I am so excited for you!! I love the name FINLEY, it was on my list, but once I saw Lucy's face it just didn;t fit! Go with the original, I really dont think people will mispronounce with that spelling.

  11. Well, it's been too long since I stopped by. Congrats on your upcoming, new addition. I like Finley. I have a friend with a daughter named Ky-Li, so I kinda like Fin-Li. But the original is cute as well. Congrats again!

Oh, and I've changed some things on my blog, so I go by Mrs. B (aka, Mommy Spice)

  12. I am only offering my opinion since you asked..... but I much prefer the traditional and classic spelling of Finley.

Finlee or Finleigh seems trendy and you might tire of it down the road. Now keep in mind I am more traditional so that is why I say that. it is a beautiful name regardless of the spelling.
